One week ago I published my honest baseline after a 3-month training break and promised that every Sunday number would go public, good or bad. This is the first check-in, and it is a perfect case study in body recomposition, because this morning the scale delivered the exact number that would have wrecked my head a year ago: 86.3 kg (190 lb), up 1.7 kg (3.7 lb) in 7 days.
A year ago I would have read that as failure. This morning I read the whole dashboard instead, and the dashboard tells a completely different story. If you only ever look at one number after 40, this post is the argument for why you are doing it wrong.
What week 1 of body recomposition actually looked like
I trained 4 times out of 4 planned, and I trained hard. That is the only metric I fully control, and it is the one that matters most in a restart week. The strategy for these first 2 weeks is deliberate: push training volume, eat big without tracking, and let the metabolism spin up at full revs before the cutting phase starts. Body recomposition needs raw material, and after 3 undertrained months my muscles were an empty warehouse waiting for deliveries.
Then real life added its signature. Yesterday I spent 5 hours on a train to pick up my family halfway back from Trieste, then drove everyone home to Zurich. It was around 37°C (99°F), I drank water all day, and dinner was a family stop at Burger King: a giant double Whopper with fries, eaten happily and without a gram of guilt. The kids start school again tomorrow. This is what week 1 of a real comeback looks like at 47. Not a montage. A calendar.
I woke up this morning feeling visibly bloated, stepped on the scale anyway, and measured everything, because the deal on the comeback log is that the numbers go up every Sunday, especially when they are inconvenient.
The scale went up, the fat went down
Can you gain 1.7 kg (3.7 lb) in a week of hard training and lose fat at the same time? Yes, and my scan data shows exactly that. Weight went up, but body fat percentage, fat mass, and subcutaneous fat all went down, while lean mass went up. Here is the week against the baseline:

Where did 1.7 kg (3.7 lb) come from in 7 days, if not from fat? Mostly from the warehouse refilling. When you restart hard training and eat big, your muscles restock glycogen, and every gram of glycogen binds roughly 3 g of water into the muscle itself. Add a full day of heat around 37°C (99°F), litres of drinking water, and the salt load of a fast-food dinner, and holding an extra 1-2 kg (2-4 lb) of water overnight is not just possible, it is expected. That weight sits in the muscle and under the skin as fluid, not in the fat cells. This is the week-to-week mechanics of body recomposition: the scale measures traffic, not direction.
This is why my scan can show weight up and fat down on the same morning without contradiction. It is also why I wrote in the body image scoreboard post that a single daily scale reading is the most emotionally expensive and least informative number a man over 40 can stare at. One week into being my own case study, the point is proving itself.
The tape: arms up, waist flat, and 2 numbers I do not believe
The tape agreed with the scan on the parts that matter. Flexed biceps went from 34.1 / 33.4 cm (13.4 / 13.1 in) to 35.2 / 35.4 cm (13.9 / 13.9 in) right and left, which after 1 week is glycogen-filled muscle doing its job, not new tissue. The waist at the navel stayed exactly where it started, 96.3 cm (37.9 in), despite the bloat, the burger, and the travel day. Flat is a win this week; the cut is what moves it under the 94 cm (37 in) target.
And then the tape claimed my chest shrank from 111.1 cm (43.7 in) to 106.6 cm (42.0 in) in 7 days, which is physiologically impossible while lean mass is rising. That is not my chest, that is my technique: tape placed a centimetre lower or higher, breath held differently, and a chest reading moves by centimetres. I am publishing the number anyway because the rule here is all numbers, good or bad.
The shoulders made the same point even louder. Last Sunday I logged 97.1 cm (38.2 in). This Sunday the tape read 123.6 cm (48.7 in). Nobody grows 26 cm (10 in) of shoulders in 7 days, so let me tell you what actually happened: I was measuring the broadest point of my own shoulders alone, one hand steering the tape behind my back, and if the tape drifts even marginally down on one side you land in a genuinely weird zone of centimetres. I had no benchmark for that landmark, no second pair of eyes, and it shows in the data. Honest assessment: last week’s number was wrong, this week’s is probably closer, and neither deserves my trust yet.
So chest and shoulders both go in the flagged column, and they hand me the measurement principle this whole series runs on: 1 data point should never scare you, and it should never flatter you either. Data points are noisy, especially self-measured ones. Trends are information. From next Sunday the protocol tightens, same landmarks, same breath, arms relaxed, tape checked in the mirror, and by week 4 the trend line will tell me which readings to believe. Building that trend in public is the entire reason the comeback log exists.
Week 2: one more week of fuel, then the 10-week cut
Week 2 is the second and final metabolism week: 4 sessions again, eating big, still untracked. Then, around August 24, the phase this whole setup has been building toward: a 10-week cut, every meal tracked in MyFitnessPal, protein pinned at about 150 g per day, and a moderate deficit of 300-400 kcal below my measured maintenance. No crash, for the reasons I laid out in why crash diets destroy muscle in men over 40: the 66.6 kg (147 lb) of lean mass I just refilled is the asset this entire comeback exists to protect.
The order matters and it is deliberate: first rebuild training capacity and fill the muscle, then cut with the metabolism running hot. Cutting from the first day of a comeback, on a body that is undertrained and glycogen-depleted, is how men over 40 end up smaller and softer at the same time. Fuel first, then sculpt. That is the body recomposition sequence for a returning lifter.
Frequently asked questions
Is body recomposition possible after 40?
Yes, and returning lifters are the best candidates for it. Thanks to muscle memory, a previously trained body regains lean mass quickly while fat stores are drawn down, so weight can hold steady or even rise while body composition improves. Beginners and returners see it most clearly; very lean, very trained people barely at all.
Why does the scale jump after 1 salty meal?
Water, not fat. A high-sodium meal makes the body temporarily retain fluid, and refilled muscle glycogen binds roughly 3 g of water per gram stored. An overnight jump of 1-2 kg (2-4 lb) after a fast-food dinner is normal and reverses within days. A single meal does not contain enough surplus calories to add even half a kilogram of actual fat.
Should you track calories during a metabolism-boost week?
I chose not to, on purpose. The job of these 2 weeks is maximum training quality and abundant fuel, and tracking would add friction to exactly the wrong phase. Tracking starts when precision starts paying: the cut. If you have a history of overshooting badly when untracked, keep a loose eye on protein and skip the rest.
Final thoughts
Week 1 delivered the exact trap this series exists to expose: a scale reading that screams backwards while every other instrument says forwards. Body recomposition does not announce itself on the scale, it hides behind it. If I graded this week on 1 number I failed. Graded on the dashboard, 4 of 4 sessions, fat down, lean mass up, waist ratio improving, it was the best week I have had since spring.
